Raayan is a 2024 Indian Tamil-language action crime film written and directed by Dhanush, in his second directorial venture. The film is produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures. It stars Dhanush in the titular role, leading an ensemble cast which includes S. J. Suryah, Prakash Raj, Selvaraghavan, Sundeep Kishan, Kalidas Jayaram, Dushara Vijayan, Aparna Balamurali, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar and Saravanan. The film follows Kathavaraayan "Raayan", a fast-food hotel owner in North Chennai, who hunts down the gangs who had ruined his family earlier.
Plot
In the 1990's, Kathavaraayan "Raayan" is the eldest of four siblings, which includes his two younger brothers Muthuvelraayan "Muthu" and Manickavelraayan "Manickam" and the youngest of them all, their sister Durga, on whom Raayan dotes on. One day, he is told by his parents that he needs to take care of his siblings until they come back home, which they, however, never do. Raayan then begins to take care of his siblings, as if he were their father, and moves from their hometown to North Chennai. They are found by Sekhar, who helps Raayan in getting a job and house at a slum area. Many years later, Raayan is now a fast-food hotel owner, Manickam begins studying at a college, and Muthu is a brash, hot-headed alcoholic who is in a relationship with Mekhala.
Two gangsters, Durai and Sethuraman "Sethu", are rival gangsters in the slum area who have a feud with each other after Durai killed Sethu's father. Raayan and his siblings are befriended with Durai, while they only have heard about Sethu. Commissioner R. Sargunam, who was recently transferred to North Chennai, wants to sew a conflict between Sethu and Durai and encounter them all together. One day, he hires goons to kill Durai's son while at the bar, however, Muthu who was also present at the bar, instead ends up killing Durai's son after getting into a fight with him. Although most people think that Sethu was the one who killed him, Durai finds out it was Muthu and calls Raayan angrily telling him to hand over Muthu within 24 hours. The next day, Raayan, Muthu, and Manickam team up and kill Durai and his gang.
Sethu, who is confused as to who killed Durai, finds out it was Raayan and his brothers and calls him for a meeting. He requests Raayan to join his side and promises him and his family protection from the police. Raayan, however, denies the request and Sethu takes a threatening tone. He promises him that he will regret his decision in joining hands with him. Later, Raayan also starts threatening Sethu, just as he did.
After that Sethu tries to assassinate Raayan but Raayan manages to kill all of them. At that time Raayan planned to marry Durga to a man who has a government job so they are in need for money. One day Raayan scolded Muthu for not doing any jobs or earning money for the family. This leads Muthu to join Sethu’s gang. Later Raayan planned to murder Sethu before his sister’s marriage. When Raayan enters Sethu second wife's house he found Durga strangled by a rope. Raayan found that it was a trap and fights for her sister but she was abducted and raped by Sethu’s men and Rayyan was stabbed by his own brothers. After that Durga saved Raayan and admits in a near by clinic.
The following day Sethu's gang try to kill Raayan in the Clinic but are saved by Sekar and Durga and the trio escape to an isolated house far from the city . Meanwhile days getting passed with Muthu and Manikham going works in Sethu's G angand as well as mekhala giving birth to Muthu's child, Parallel to this events , Raayan getting recovered from the wounds transpire. While recovering Raayan comes to know that Durga has been raped by a Sethu's Henchmen,,he wants to take revenge hence kidnapping Sethu's second wife He makes a deal with Sethu that if his wife needs to be released , he needs the henchman to surrender to Raayan. Sethu accepts this and the Henchman gets his privates smashed and killed by Durga.
The brothers Muthu and Manikham wanted to amend things with Raayan and Durga. So calls Sekar and wants to arrange a meeting with Raayan and plead for mercy. Sethu uses this opportunity to make Sekar spit out Raayan's whereabouts but he refuses and Sethu kills him out of anger.
Seeing all this, the police chief wants to encounter kill all of them, while making them think that it was a compromise peace talk. But when the meeting is arranged he changes the plan immediately as there are many goons and candidly makes a deal with Raayan that he should kill Sethu and gang , so he could arrange Raayan and Durga new government ID details, so they can peacefully move to a different location. In the evening of Bhogi function, Manikham gets killed by Durga for betraying Raayan. In the ensuing fight, Raayan kills Sethu, his brother Muthu and the Sethu gang Brutally.
At the last, Mekhala gives her child to Raayan and Durga to take care as they pack their things and leave out of town for good as Raayan does not believe in the police chief’s deal.

Production
On 29 December 2017, Dhanush announced that for his second directorial after Pa Paandi (2017), he would collaborate with Hema Rukmani and Murali Ramasamy, headers of Thenandal Studio Limited.He further stated that he would play the lead and the production would begin the following year. To which, on 7 September 2018, a muhurat puja was held in Chennai. Touted to be a bilingual film released in Tamil and Telugu-languages, it would feature Nagarjuna, Aditi Rao Hydari, S. J. Suryah, R. Sarathkumar and Srikanth. Music composer Sean Roldan, cinematographer Om Prakash and editor Prasanna GK were brought on board. Rukmani stated "It's an impressive story and is Dhanush's dream project that he's had in mind for a long time. He's very passionate about the film and when we heard the script, we understood why", during the press launch of the venture.
Tentatively titled DD2, the principal photography began the same month. In early March 2019, reporters claimed that the venture was shelved, citing that the venture was only shot in few bits, mainly due to the cast's schedule. Later, it was reported that it was not shelved, but was instead set on hold, as Dhanush was busy filming for Asuran (2019). In June 2020, Dhanush's elder brother, Selvaraghavan, was reported to have been approached by the actor to direct a part of venture, as Dhanush was busy with his current commitments.The project was later put on stall. However, it was reported that it would begin after the COVID-19 pandemic ends, which was later proved to be false. Following two years, in 2023, it was reported that instead of reviving the script, Dhanush would reportedly write a new story, to be funded by Kalanithi Maran of Sun Pictures. The production house publicly announced the project on 18 January, and was tentatively titled as D50. The film's official title, Raayan, was revealed on 19 February 2024.
